Matthew Kavanagh

Matthew Kavanagh is the co-director of Global Justice, an organization dedicated to mobilizing a powerful movement of students and youth in the U.S. to promote socially and economically just solutions on global HIV/AIDS, trade, and child survival. He is an organizer and educator with a long-time commitment to building a movement for global economic justice.
Before coming to Global Justice, Matt worked with a wide variety of NGOs and social-movement organizations, most recently in South Africa, where he worked on water rights and apartheid reparations campaigns. In the US, he directed a national legal- and human rights-education program at Street Law and worked as a community organizer with the Boston Youth Organizing Project. Matt has organized for people-focused international development and trade policies with groups including the Mobilization for Global Justice, and coordinated health, civic engagement, and environmental education programs in Massachusetts, New York, Guatemala, and Namibia. As the National Coordinator of the Student Global AIDS Campaign (SGAC) at Global Justice, Matt previously coordinated a nation-wide network of youth AIDS activists and guided SGAC's treatment access campaign focused on international trade and pharmaceutical company policies. He has written for the Huffington Post, Z Magazine, Clamor Magazine, the Yale Journal of Law and Feminism, and other publications, as well as curricula for young people on issues ranging from US family law to the economic roots of the global HIV/AIDS pandemic. He holds a Bachelors Degree in comparative politics from Vassar College and a Masters Degree in community education and organizing from Harvard University. Originally from upstate New York, Matt has lived in Washington, DC on and off for the last five years.

Evelyn Sallah

Evelyn Lena Sallah is the co-director for operations at Global Justice, an organization dedicated to mobilizing a powerful movement of students and youth in the U.S. to promote socially and economically just solutions on global HIV/AIDS, trade, and child survival. Her background combines grassroots organizing and public policy with experience in the investment and finance world.
Evelyn has an extensive NGO background, having served most recently as the Program Associate and interim Director for the Department of Public Education and Mobilization at Africa Action, working on program planning and implementation on campaigns on genocide in Darfur, HIV/AIDS, and cancellation of Africa's debt. She also spent time at the Alliance for Justice working for patients’ rights and to prevent extremists from occupying positions in the Supreme Court, as well as in the field department at People for the American Way working with the African-American Minister's Leadership Council and Election Protection programs. Evelyn’s career began, however, focused on investment banking and she spent time at Goldman Sachs & Co in Fixed Income Currencies & Commodities.
Evelyn has earned a Bachelor's degree in Economics and French from Spelman College, Master's Degree in African Studies from Howard University, and a "MBA Business Boot Camp" Certificate from the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. Born in Sierra Leone, originally of Gambian nationality, Evelyn spent ten years living on the continent of Africa in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and Lusaka, Zambia.
National Organizer - SGAC
Erin Burns

Erin Burns is the National Organizer for the Student Global AIDS Campaign at Global Justice. She has previously worked at a community syringe exchange and for the American Civil Liberties Union's Washington office. Erin served on SGAC's steering committee for two years and wrote her honors thesis on the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. A recent graduate of Guilford College, Erin holds a joint degree in Political Science and Peace and Conflict Studies.
National Organizer - SCCS
Shelley Chinnan

Shelley Chinnan is the national organizer for the Student Campaign for Child Survival at Global Justice. A recent graduate of The University of Georgia, Shelley is an experienced issue organizer on gender, the environment, human rights, and war. While in college Shelley was the leader of the Women’s Studies Student Organization; co-founded the Coalition Somos América (The We Are America Coalition) which brought together professors, students, activists, and community members to organize on economic justice and immigrant rights; and created the Kitab Project which raised $30,000 to support literacy in Southeast Asia. She has worked as the volunteer coordinator for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and as a children’s advocate for CASA. For her accomplishments she received the 2007 Generation Student Leader Award from Choice USA. Shelley is fluent in Spanish, Hindi, & Punjabi.

Hilda Guttierez

Hilda Gutierrez is the National Organizer for the Student Trade Justice Campaign at Global Justice. A native of Nicaragua, Hilda has extensive experience as an organizer and researcher. She previously worked with the Institute for Policy Studies’ Global Economy Project on issues of debt, trade, and their impact on both the global South and the US and conducted independent field research in Nicaragua and Northern Ireland. She was a lead organizer with AU Solidarity, working on workers’ rights issues and on the creation of a Corporate Responsibility Advisory Board for socially responsible investment at AU. Hilda holds a Masters Degree in International Peace and Conflict Resolution and a Bachelors in International Relations from American University.
Technology, Communications, and Administration Coordinator
Andrew Kohan

Andrew Kohan coordinates Global Justice’s administration, technology, and communications. A former member of the national steering committee for GJ’s Student Global AIDS Campaign and graduate of George Washington University, Andrew has substantial experience as a graphic designer, web designer, and IT professional. His past experience includes work as an online organizer for MoveOn Student Action, as an organizer with Ohio Citizen Action, and as administrator at TransManagement, a DC-based transportation consultancy.
