Global Apartheid: How oppressive systems marginalize people in DC, the U.S. and the World

9:30 – 11:15, Copley Formal

Washington DC is home base for some of the worlds most powerful institutions; institutions which are orchestrating the lives of millions of people around the world. From the IMF and World Bank, USAID, the offices of the pharmaceutical industry lobby, to the U.S. Trade Representative, the U.S. Treasury and course the president and Congress of the U.S. All of these institutions work together along with others like the WTO to create a system of Global Apartheid.

Based on race and place, the Global Apartheid is a system of inequality dictates access to wealth, power and basic human rights. The elites in the rich and powerful countries control the major global decision-making bodies, like those mentioned above, to preserve this system; making sure that the privileged citizens of rich countries have more resources and access to human rights than people in poor countries.

Join us for this major panel and opening for the annual Student Conference on AIDS, Trade and Child Survival. Speakers will connect the Global Apartheid to labor rights, health care, worsening global poverty, the role of international financial institutions, and how Global Apartheid comes home to DC. But most importantly speakers will inspire us and remind us of our own power to organize and mobilize to break down these systems of oppression.
